The story of Villa Vasa
When we were planning to build Villa Vasa, we had many ideas for future guests. Before construction, we had opened our reindeer farm to tourists a couple of years ago. We wanted that when our reindeer farm guests come here to the middle of nature, they could be at peace and participate in the reindeer farm programs, enjoy nature, enjoy good company and be as much as possible with nature.
Did you know that the Finnish word “vasa” means a newborn or a reindeer less than a year old? We wanted our accommodation to be a natural part of Reindeer Farm Reindeer.
That is why we built Villa Vasa. Villa Vasa is built in a particularly scenic location by the lake. The building has large windows so you can enjoy the magnificent lake and forest view as much as possible. If you are lucky you can see Auroras dancing in the sky. The nearest inhabited house is our reindeer farm located 400 meters away. So you have a lot of privacy and peace. When you come here you will find that the area is very sparsely populated and a wilderness area.
In Villa Vasa’s material choices, we wanted to make only high-quality choices so that the reindeer farm’s programs and accommodation were both of high quality. We wanted Villa Vasa to have all the amenities and equipment to make it easy for anyone to come here and find all the necessary equipment.
We wanted the spaces large and spacious to make it comfortable for families or other groups to enjoy the company, the scenery and the fireplace. We wanted a large patio area to bring more space. And large windows so you can watch the sunrise and sunset. In mid-winter, of course, that is not possible because the sun does not rise at all. But even then, the reflection of light is great. Even then it is not dark.
We wanted high-quality interior materials and individual furniture as an appreciation for our guests. On the wall of the living room are ox horns (a male reindeer) that are over 80 years old and belonged to Jukka’s grandfather.
From the windows of the sauna inside Villa Vasa, you can admire the lake landscape and think about whether you dare to visit rolling in snow like Finnish people use to do.
Villa Vasa’s main building material is certified and responsibly felled Finnish wood. The building is very energy efficient and warm over the year. The windows are triple glazed. The form of heating is an energy-efficient water-air heat pump. The building has automatic central heating. The lighting is implemented with LED technology.
Firewood is from our own forest. There are recycling bins for waste. The premises have mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Therefore, the indoor air is fresh and yet energy efficient. Even in temperatures – 30-40 C it is always warm inside and in the Finnish way you can walk inside the houses with your socks or barefoot. Villa Vasa has underfloor heating and the floor is pleasantly warm. The fireplace is built to create an atmosphere and not so much for heating.
The water at Villa Vasa comes from a natural spring located on the farm’s land. The water is absolutely potable and the quality of the water is checked regularly.
Bed linen is naturally included in the accommodation. Villa Vasa has one bathroom / toilet and another separate toilet.
Downstairs are two bedrooms. Upstairs there is an attic area with two single beds and a sofa bed. A children’s travel cot is also available free of charge.
About one kilometer away is a shed (covered fireplace) built for our guests (covered fireplace), which is for private use only. There are firewood, sausage sticks and other supplies. You can walk along the path to the shed both in summer and winter enjoying the peace of nature. There is no extra charge for using the shed and firewood.
There is a free sledge for downhill skiing. You can use ice fishing equipments for free. You also have access to traditional Finnish propellers (kicking sledges). You can book a guided private ice fishing or reindeer tour by contacting Katja by email. It is a good idea to book activities immediately after booking to make sure the program is available at the time you want.
Villa Vasa has a full kitchen with cooking utensils, so you can be sure to prepare breakfast or other dishes. Tableware is for 10 people. Please note that the nearest grocery store (small, very limited selection) is about 20 km away in Meltaus. There is another larger grocery store 35 km away. There is no public transport in the area. We recommend to buy all things in the center of Rovaniemi.
The owners of Villa Vasa always welcome all guests and guide you to get started. Even during your stay, support is close by if needed.

Where is it located?
- Villa Vasa’s address: Suopajärventie 684, Rovaniemi
- Even in winter, the road is plowed and you can reach the yard by car. There are car heating plugs in the yard, which are free to use. Preheating the car ensures that the car operates in the cold.
Yesterday we visited Katja and her reindeer farm. The entire day couldn't have been nicer.
-Pickup/transportation went smoothly. (Distance from Rovaniemi approx. one hour; pick up around 10 a.m.)
-When we arrived at the farm, we were greeted very hospitably. A big plus point and a decisive factor for us when booking: small groups, no mass tourism! We were 9 people in total.
-First we were dressed (recommended because you have a lot to do with the animals and could possibly get dirty). We were then divided into 2 even smaller groups. One group drove with Katja and the snowmobile through the forest towards the reindeer enclosure to feed the female reindeer - it was unbelievable how beautifully the animals can live there. A true paradise.
The other group was allowed to start with the reindeer sleigh ride. Approximately 2km through a beautiful winter landscape, a unique experience. After half the route we stop briefly to take a few photos 🙂
We were told a lot of exciting things about the reindeer and how they are kept.
-Duration of feeding and reindeer sleigh ride each one hour. Afterwards we were invited to Katja's house for lunch (reindeer soup). We have rarely experienced so much hospitality on a trip, thank you very much! A very personal experience with such a small group.
After the lunch break, the two groups swapped and spent another hour with/with the reindeer.
At the end we met around the fire in the Finnish barbecue hut (Kota) for coffee/hot chocolate and homemade cake from Katja. We reviewed the day together and were picked up again around 4 p.m.
We can wholeheartedly recommend the trip.
The reindeer are in good hands with this great family. Thank you for everything!
One of the best parts was the peaceful location—tucked away in the middle of nature with no tourists in sight. It felt like a hidden gem! She spent quality time with the animals, patiently explaining everything and answering all our questions in detail.
As a lovely touch, she even offered us a small cake and hot chocolate, which made the experience even more special. If you’re looking for a unique, intimate, and truly authentic reindeer farm visit, we highly recommend this place!
Emilie, Louise and Estelle
We chose Porohaka Reindeer Farm because we were looking for an authentic experience away from the tourist crowds, and it did not disappoint. Katja provided a very personal experience where you could forget you’re a tourist. It was just our family with her, as she keeps the groups small, which made the entire visit feel relaxed and intimate.
Katja welcomed us warmly and ensured we were all well-prepared for the cold, providing extra layers where needed so that we could fully enjoy the experience in comfort. We then had a ride on a sleigh pulled by her snowmobile through the forest to the reindeer enclosure, the ride itself was a great experience in a wonderful setting.
The enclosure was large and once inside we could disembark and feed the reindeer in our own time. The reindeer themselves were wonderful—gentle, inquisitive, and happy to come up and be fed by us. There was no rush at all, just plenty of time to enjoy being with these beautiful animals in their peaceful surroundings. Katja provided lots of information about her family's history of reindeer farming and it was lovely chatting with her and learning more about the reindeer.
Thank you so much, Katja! This was truly an unforgettable experience and the highlight of our trip.
